Better Recipes for Better Scoops
The perfect scoop of ice cream…
… there’s nothing like it.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a full-out ice cream snob… I’ve thoroughly enjoyed countless scoops of standard ice cream chain ice cream over the course of my life. I’ve never even complained about the bulk, air pumped, chemical loaded, supermarket stuff. But for me, there’s still something special about that perfect scoop. You know, the kind of ice cream you might get at a hip little café or at an artisan gelateria in Italy. Fresh local ingredients, unique flavor combinations, and perhaps some deceased ancestor’s secret recipe, make the perfect scoop something that grasps at eternity… Hopefully you don’t mind my pretentious attempts to sound poetic, but my mission to churn up the perfect scoop has been quite the adventure! Let me explain.
It all started a bit over five years ago, when I purchased my first ice cream maker. I quickly discovered that learning to make homemade ice cream is not an easy task. My first recipes came out anything but perfect… However, I started to really enjoy the experimentation. For example, I once tried to make a basil ice cream, and I’ve even tried out a bacon recipe (note, you will not find those recipes on this site)! But after a lot of trial and really a lot error, I finally started to get some delicious results. I actually began to impress my friends and family with the ice creams that I made. They would say things like, “where did you buy this?”, “you couldn’t have really made this yourself?”, and especially “mmmm this is good”!
In so many words, my ice cream maker and I have been through a lot together, but it has all been worth it.
A lot of experimentation always leads to a few pretty awesome successes, and so, I’ve decided to create this website to share what I’ve learned in my attempts to churn up the perfect scoop of homemade ice cream. I don’t intend to write a book anytime soon, and so I thought I might as well share my “artisan” ice cream recipes with the worldwide homemade ice cream making community via this website! You’ll find more than a few of my “perfect scoop” recipes, as well as my tips for learning how to make awesome homemade ice cream.
Once you learn how to do it, making ice cream is really a lot of fun. I usually just buy some high quality ingredients at the market, and then try out my next recipe experiment.
